Come discover
the tropical beauty of Roatan, the largest of The Bay Islands, located
30 miles off the coast of Honduras. Roatan is approximately 30 miles
long and 2 miles wide at the widest point, covered in lush green
hills.
Roatan boasts palm fringed beaches, the beautiful
Caribbean, and an extensive coral reef system surrounding the island.
Some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Western Caribbean
can be found around Roatan, including 97% of the known coral species
found anywhere in the Caribbean.
The island has been home to quite a diversity
of cultures over the centuries, including the original inhabitants,
Paya Indians. In 1502, Christopher Columbus 'discovered' the Bay
Islands and claimed them for Spain.
During the next century, Port Royal harbour, on
the eastern end of the island, was home to many buccaneers. Stories
of buried treasure and sunken galleons abound, especially among
the locals who call Port Royal home.
Today, the English, Spanish, Payan Indian, Garifuna,
Antillean, and Spanish Honduran islanders have been joined by a
host of expatriate residents and tourists from countries around
the world.
Islanders main industries
are commercial fishing and tourism. The weather is warm - usually
between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Trade winds keep the climate comfortable
year-round.
